24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, NZ’s rescue helicopters are there when we need them. Along with remote rescue, the highly trained specialist crews have been called upon to perform critical hospital transfers, attend emergency births, and respond to car and boating accidents. In fact, they may attend any type of emergency where rapid response or difficult location is a factor.
2020 is the Auckland Rescue Helicopter service’s 50th year in operation. This is a milestone for the service, which started the world’s first ever civilian surf rescue helicopter service back in late 1970. Since then, the service has been tasked to over 20,000 thousands missions and is internationally recognised for its pioneering work in saving lives.
