Advanced Lighting Technologies was recently offered the opportunity to host a guest lecture at the Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology in Tauranga to a group of students studying for their New Zealand Diploma in Architectural Technology.
Abhishek Wali, ADLT’s Senior Lighting Engineer represented ADLT and spent an hour running the group of students through some basic lighting concepts.
Making the best possible luminaire selection for any type of project whether it be commercial, residential or for the public requires a sound knowledge of the basic principles. Abhishek explained common lighting terminology and the various light technical parameters like luminous flux and illuminance. The discussion was largely focused on lighting colour concepts like spectral power distribution (SPD), correlated colour temperature (CCT) and colour rendering index (CRI).
As architects and engineers collaborate frequently on real-world projects, Abhishek also took the group through some of the important points in the lighting design process. Hopefully, the students each took something away from the discussion and as a result, feel inspired and educated enough to make quality lighting decisions for projects of their own in the future.
